5. Why should wallets and seed phrases be stored in safes?

Hardware wallets, their access keys, and recovery phrases should always be stored separately to protect your crypto assets. If a wallet with its PIN or just the seed phrase is found without authorization, your assets are at immediate risk. A PIN is enough to initiate transfers using the device, just as the seed phrase can be used to access the wallet on any compatible device.

Loss or damage to the wallet can also cause serious issues, as the entire security structure must be rebuilt—often a costly and time-consuming process. If a component of your wallet is accidentally discovered, it could lead to theft, extortion, or even investigations. That’s why it is strongly recommended to store at least one component separately in an external safe. This protects digital assets from misuse, theft, or damage.

It can be a simple and cost-effective way to retain full control over your assets without paying high custody fees to banks or trustees. 6. How does physical storage of a seed phrase key code work?

Once your secret seed list has been transformed into your SeedKey, you can store it physically anywhere and create unlimited copies using any material you like. Whether on paper notes or printed forms, engraved in stone, wood, or metal—your imagination is the only limit.

Store it wherever you prefer: on the back of photos or artworks, inside folders using transparent sleeves or stickers, or even integrated into jewelry like pendants, rings, or bracelets. Carry it with you, keep it at home, or store it—together with your seed list—at one of our partnered safe storage providers near you.

This level of flexibility is only possible with the SeedKey—not with your original words!

7. How can seed phrase key codes be stored digitally?

Yes, you heard that right! It’s a no-go with seed words—but perfectly allowed with the SeedKey. Because only together with your unique and secret seed list does your SeedKey become your seed phrase.

At last, a secure offline generation of a SeedKey is possible—and you can store it digitally on your phone, laptop, hard drive, USB stick, in the cloud, or anywhere else.

An innovative and final solution for storing your SeedKey is the signed and verified message from your hardware wallet containing your wallet address. This signature can be stored online and is guaranteed to belong to your wallet.

It doesn’t get more clear or organized than that!

8. Can seed phrase key codes be stored biometrically?

If you want to keep multiple key codes with you at all times, you can choose to carry them not just on your skin, like jewelry or a wallet, but even under your skin. This way, they become invisible to others and cannot be stolen or lost.

With a mini biometric NFC chip implanted in your body, you carry your key code wherever you want. It is invisible and does not interfere with your daily life. Every modern smartphone functions as both an NFC reader and writer, allowing you to discreetly reveal your code whenever you choose.

Together with your seed list, you instantly regain access to your seed phrase—the key to your Bitcoin assets.

9. What laws govern the storage of wallets and seed phrases?

The custody of cryptographic keys and wallets is regulated in Germany under Section 1 (1a) Sentence 2 No. 6 of the German Banking Act (KWG) and falls under the category of "crypto custody business." Providers are required to obtain a license, which comes with strict regulatory requirements. These include proof of IT security and infrastructure (e.g., HSMs, access management), compliance and risk management, staff with crypto expertise, as well as adherence to MiCAR and anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.

Because these requirements are complex and costly, very few market participants—such as banks, trustees, notaries, safe deposit services, or family offices—currently hold or even pursue such a license.

Across the EU, crypto custody is governed by the AMLD5 directive and, from 2024/2025, by the new Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR).

However, storing seed lists as part of SeedProtector’s SeedPro Bitcoin protection is not classified as custody of cryptographic keys or cryptocurrencies under Section 1 (1a) Sentence 2 No. 6 KWG. It is therefore not subject to licensing requirements.

In SeedPro's setup, there is no "split key custody" scenario. A bank, trustee, or safe storage provider that holds a seed list but has no access to the wallet does not require a license, since there is no complete crypto custody involved. The full BIP39 word list is considered a base set of possible words forming a user-specific seed phrase.

As a result, professional storage of keys and wallets can be provided legally and without a license, under certain conditions.
